Project overview

ABAU, reference BRM055, is a large-scale nature-based carbon project under development in Papua New Guinea. The project encompasses more than 148,000 hectares of predominantly forested customary land and is intended to protect standing tropical forest from deforestation and degradation while supporting durable participation by customary landowners and local communities.

BRM Carbon Solutions has acquired the project for continuing commercial development through its Papua New Guinea operations. BRM is reviewing and updating the earlier project work so that the project can progress under the applicable Papua New Guinea legal, sovereign and technical requirements. Historical project records provide a substantial development foundation, but they do not represent current validation, registry acceptance or issued carbon credits.

Project Purpose and Opportunity

The project has been established in response to the continuing pressure placed on tropical forests by commercial and unregulated logging, land-use change and other local drivers of forest loss. Its central purpose is to create a credible long-term alternative that places value on forest conservation, supports responsible land stewardship and protects carbon stocks that would otherwise remain exposed to degradation risk.

The commercial opportunity is the development of an investable carbon project capable of progressing through project documentation, independent assessment, government requirements and an appropriate carbon standard or registry pathway. Any future Carbon Credit Units will depend on completion of the applicable methodology, baseline, additionality, safeguards, validation, verification, sovereign approval and issuance requirements. BRM does not present projected units as issued or guaranteed credits.

Forest Landscape and Environmental Value

The broader project landscape contains extensive tropical forest, river systems, upland areas, coastal environments and mangrove habitat. Historical project studies describe a predominantly intact natural landscape with some areas affected by earlier logging and subsequent regrowth. Maintaining forest cover can help conserve habitat, reduce emissions associated with forest loss, protect waterways and support the resilience of connected terrestrial and coastal ecosystems.

Papua New Guinea supports exceptional biological diversity, including endemic and threatened plant and animal species. The project development process must therefore integrate biodiversity assessment, environmental safeguards and ongoing monitoring. Detailed species records and sensitive ecological locations should remain within controlled technical documents rather than being published as unverified claims on the public webpage.

Customary Landowners and Community Participation

Customary landowners and affected communities are central stakeholders in ABAU. The project development framework is intended to respect customary rights, local knowledge and community decision-making while establishing transparent arrangements for participation, consent and benefit sharing. Engagement must be inclusive and documented throughout project development and operations.

The project framework provides for Free, Prior and Informed Consent, social mapping and landowner identification, a grievance redress mechanism, social and environmental safeguards, and gender equality and social inclusion. These mechanisms should be updated and independently reviewed as the project progresses. Potential community benefits may include employment, capability development and agreed investment in local priorities, but specific benefits must follow approved plans, available project revenue and accountable governance arrangements.

Technical Development Approach

Development work includes remote-sensing analysis, land-cover and vegetation assessment, mapping, field verification, carbon-stock assessment and evaluation of historical forest disturbance. Satellite data and change-detection tools can support the identification of deforestation trends and provide an evidence base for monitoring, reporting and verification. Field data and stakeholder records remain necessary to validate remotely sensed information.

The project documentation must define the eligible project area, baseline scenario, deforestation drivers, additionality, leakage risk, permanence arrangements, monitoring methodology and environmental and social safeguards. The earlier Project Design Document is being treated as a historical working source. BRM will determine what information remains current and what must be revised before the project enters any formal validation, verification or registry process.

Monitoring Permanence and Risk Management

A credible forest-carbon project requires continuing evidence that the project area is being monitored and that identified deforestation risks are being addressed. The proposed monitoring system is expected to combine satellite observation, periodic change detection, field information and documented local reporting. This work will support the assessment of forest-cover change, potential leakage, reversal risks and the effectiveness of project activities over time.

Permanence arrangements, buffer requirements and responses to fire, illegal logging, severe weather or other disturbances will be determined through the selected methodology and project documentation. BRM will also maintain procedures for recording concerns, investigating incidents and implementing corrective action. Public reporting should describe verified monitoring results only after the applicable review has been completed.

Current Development Priorities

The immediate priorities are to confirm the continuing legal and commercial basis of the project, reconcile historical project records, verify the land and stakeholder information required for the current development pathway, and update the technical documentation. Government engagement, project-company records, consent evidence and safeguards documentation must remain aligned as the project advances.

Subsequent work will include final methodology selection, completion of the revised Project Design Document, technical studies, stakeholder consultation and preparation for independent validation and verification. Registry submission, issuance and commercial sale are later-stage outcomes and must not be represented as completed while these development gates remain outstanding.

Governance and Integrity

BRM Carbon Solutions PNG Limited is the identified project company for the current public profile. Project governance is intended to combine BRM oversight, Papua New Guinea operational management, customary-landowner participation, government engagement and independent technical assurance. The applicable project agreements, authority to act and transfer of relevant development rights must be maintained in the controlled project record.

BRM will progress ABAU in accordance with applicable Papua New Guinea requirements and the rules of any selected carbon standard or registry. Public communications should distinguish clearly between project development, projected carbon outcomes and credits that have been independently verified and issued.

Commercial Engagement

BRM may engage with qualified strategic buyers, project investors, technical partners and future carbon purchasers during development. Public information is intended to provide an initial institutional overview rather than replace due diligence. Detailed project information will be released only through an approved process that protects customary-landowner information, project rights and BRM commercial interests. Access may require identity checks, evidence of capacity, confidentiality undertakings and acceptance of deal-room conditions.

Project Status Notice

ABAU as our labelled Project 01 in PNG remains a project under development. It is subject to continuing technical work, confirmation of project rights and stakeholder consents, applicable Papua New Guinea government requirements, selection and acceptance of an eligible methodology, independent validation and verification, registry requirements and final issuance. Project area, timing, crediting period and estimated carbon outcomes may change as due diligence and technical work progress. No statement on this page constitutes a representation that carbon credits have been issued or are guaranteed to be issued.
